Adventuring Nias Island in North Sumatra

After repeated many times correspondency via internet with Mr. Siegfried and Mrs. Amann Siegfried , a couple of Germany wife and husband, who was settle Shanghai, China, ,then I succed to convinced them to come to Sumatra. For what? Yes, for this adventure, called this Sumatra Overland Adventure.

We started last June 2008 and finished in the beginning of last July 2008, after exploring the island of Nias, Jambi and separation "while" in Bengkulu. We started late and ended early in June and July, after Exploring the island of Nias, Jambi and separation "while" in Bengkulu.

Medan, June 26 around 10:00 am, both my clients arrived at Polonia Airport. Driving a Hyundai sedan with a private tour Arya, without long we went straight to Sibolga. Our first goal is to Nias. My previous clients have chosen the land rather than air travel. The reason, “mehr Sehen, mehr erleben - many visits, more and more to be enjoyed,” said Mr. Amann to me.

After staying overnight at the Hotel Bumi Asih Jaya Sibolga, tomorrow morning we took KM. Gemilang, departing at 09.30 pm. The sense of the sea as if to force Mr. Amann to stay awake with his two Nikon DSLR camera. It seems he did not want to lose a spot he had to take home to Germany later. Four hours later, we arrived in Gunung Sitoli. Our first goal in Nias is Sorake.

Sorake Beach Nias and equal in the eyes of Europeans, especially the surfing enthusiast. With waves reaching a height of 1.5 meters or more, Sorake considered an alternative to surfing beaches in the world's second after Hawaii. Be proud of!

Both my client was so excited to Sorake. Lodging facilities were very simple does not matter. I recommend Sorake Beach Inn Lily-cost Rp 100 thousand per night, which is located close to the beach, although there are actually more comfortable lodging cost Rp 280 thousand per night. This is for the satisfaction they enjoy Sorake.

One of the most visible when comparing current conditions with Sorake few years earlier, the question of infrastructure facilities. Access roads along the 120 km from Gunung Sitoli and 15 km away from Kota Teluk Dalam, pretty good. Access to it so we could go for 2.5 hours.

Sorake was "only" to surf. This reminds me of an anecdote my senior guide Gultom "Boraspati" who says, "If there are people who could bring in high waves throughout the season, I dare him to pay expensive."

Indeed, despite the challenging surf location, high tide can not always be felt at any time in Sorake. If so, would Sorake never deserted from Western tourists. High waves are usually "busy" roll-on roll Sorake in March-April.

Nias und ist sehr schoen emptehlenwert

In Sorake, beautiful blue cloud is a free gift to the newcomers. Sea view is also reminiscent of the grace of the Creator. Unfortunately, the gift is less organized and well cared for. Along the side of the beach, public garbage strewn about.

From our Sorake Beach Lagundri. The beach is no less beautiful. But, still with the beach conditions are almost the same as Sorake, ie garbage strewn here and there. Very unfortunate. I had to change the subject when I mention these two clients this hygiene problem.

Lagundri Coast people prefer swimming than surfing. The wave was as high as in Sorake. Along shore 5 km looks stunning with white sand. Lagundri become an alternative place for tourists to sunbath - sunbathe. Or enjoy a sunrise and the sunrise.

Nias is not just the beach. But also culture and history. That's why I invited two of my clients see attractions in the village of stone jump Bawomataluo. As a guide, I should be able to explain the tradition of the stone jump to my clients, who had become a symbol of hereditary adult male identity Nias. He and one of the war strategy taught by the ancestors. Now, the war between the village no longer exists. But, do not jump the stone away.

Enough to pay a minimum of Rp 150 thousand for one or two times a springboard, visitors can see and capture the action that Nias soldiers jump. And most importantly, I do not want both my client was disappointed by letting them do not know their story to take home to Germany later.

In another Gomo. Although both of my guests rather than cultural anthropologists, but they once seemed excited when we go there. Gomo were a lot of area stores Nias cultural sites, one of the oldest cultures in the world. Some of them Menhir, sarcophagus and some historic sites relics of ancestors whose age has reached hundreds of years.

Interestingly, transportation access to ketidakadaaan Gomo made as an alternative trekking tours in Nias. We confirm that to Gomo, should be guided by local people more control of the area.

Adventure so memorable. "Nias und ist sehr schoen emptehlenwert - Nias is very beautiful and worth to recommend," commented Mr. Amann, ending our adventure in Nias, which makes me proud. But it is still early adventures. Two areas are still waiting for us, the Jambi and Bengkulu.
